Investing In Yourself [Mind, Body, & Spirit]

When it comes to the people we love and care about, we have no problem helping them out. Sometimes we’ll even go above and beyond just to give a helping hand, but why do we feel the need to help others and not ourselves? Why do we assume everything will be okay within our lives without self-improvement and self-care? Sometimes it takes a while before we realize we need to make some changes and start making better decisions for ourselves. These incidents usually come to our attention when something tremendous happens or life changing. It’s like we ‘snap out of it’ and start focusing on our lives instead. In all honesty though, how can we ever expect to help others when we need to help ourselves first? What’s that saying?

“You can’t pour from an empty glass!”

Maybe that should be a motto to live by from now on for some of us. We often think that putting ourselves first can make us look “selfish” or “inconsiderate” when in realty, we’re just looking out for our well-being. There is NOTHING selfish about that!

There comes a time in our lives when we need to take a step back and look at the big picture. It’s important to analyze how far we’ve come and honor all our accomplishments we have made, but we also need to focus on the toxic traits we have. No matter what anyone says, EVERYBODY has some kind of negative characteristic that they can work on. Putting yourself first and working on these attributes not only helps you, but also those around you. It will make you feel better in the long run once you achieved your goal(s) you’re trying to pursue as well.

Self-care is not just about bettering yourself, but also about taking care of you and loving who you are as a person. You get one body to live in, so why would you destroy your only home? You wouldn’t want to live in a messy, unorganized house, right? So why not take care of your body in the same way? This can be anything from face masks, eating better, journaling, reading, a stress free night alone watching movies, or simply buying yourself that item you’ve been viewing all week on Amazon (to name a few). Self-care has NO limits, as long as you’re making yourself happy taking care of YOU! (and of course not hurting anyone else in the process). You would be amazed just how these small gestures can make you feel better time after time.

Self-improvement is something I believe we will always continue to work on. There is no ‘finish line’ when it comes to bettering ourselves. It’s something we will work on for the rest of our lives as we continue to grow and evolve. We will always go through obstacles in life that will challenge our mind, body, and spirit, so it’s important to step back every now and then and make sure we are on the right track. It’s easy to lose sight of the big picture and end up on a bad path again with our toxic ways.

(SIDE NOTE- If you feel your friends or family are a huge influence in your harmful behavior, it’s probably best to cut all ties now instead of later.)

To sum it all up, you are the only person who has the power to take care of you and correct your past mistakes. If you don’t do it, who else will? Not. A. Damn. Soul.

  1. What a great read. I had to step back this month and work on self-improvement as my goals weren’t reached and my coworkers pointed out that I get angry when I receive criticism. It has been a problem but apparently they are worried.

    1. Ouch! It can always be hard to accept criticism, but it’s just a part of life unfortunately. I know I can take it badly at times as well. They might just be looking out for your best interest! Thanks so much for reading! 💓

  2. This is so true lovely, we all need to look after ourselves because we can’t run off an empty tank. We need to physically and mentally refuel so that we can be the best version of ourselves we can be. I hope that people read this and go to take care of themselves. A great post!

  6. I agree so much with the importance of taking care of one’s own mental health in order to become more healthy overall! Positive mindsets can have better impacts on our overall physical health than negative mindsets. I write about this mind-body connection in my own blog posts from the perspective of positive psychology, which demonstrates the importance of meaning and fulfillment in one’s life. Feel free to check it out sometime and leave any contributions to the content that you would like. Great post, keep it up!

  7. This is such a well-written and articulate post! I completely agree with you, looking out for number one is sometimes a real necessity. I went through a stage of feeling absolutely drained by trying to always be there for other people without working on my own issues. It’s hard! And you’re right, sometimes self care is actually doing the harder stuff like eating better and exercising in order to give yourself the care you deserve!

  8. I believe its important to self reflect and have “me time”. Self love is important and our happiness should be our priority. Like you said, investing in ourselves is a must and should not be negotiable.

  9. Love this post! I’ve been really trying recently with self care because I do a lot for other people. When I have time to myself I end up wasting it scrolling through social media or something and then sleeping. I’ve found meditation and taking time for reading with a lovely cnadle on is great self care. oooh and can’t forget a nice warm bath. This is great advice

  10. I enjoyed this post! I’m trying to do this myself and even though I’m only in the beginning, I’m feeling a lot better about myself. I’ve already cut ties with the toxic people in my life so now I need to start on loving myself xx

  11. Love this post! I started on the journey of consciously working on loving myself a few years back, and I can see a huge difference in the way I carry myself and am perceived by others. It’s a wonderful world when you love yourself mind, body and soul.

  12. This is so important for people to understand about themselves. For years I had such a hard time with putting myself before others. Once I realized that’s what I need to do it relieved so much stress I was feeling! Great post!
