Setting Goals For Yourself.

With the start of a new year, people tend to make New Year’s resolutions that they try to stick to all year long. Even though this is a great idea, why do we wait until a new year to start working towards our goals? There are 365 days in a year and everyday that we don’t take advantage of to better ourselves is a complete loss.

Setting goals for yourself is super important. I really can’t stress this enough. Being able to look back on your accomplishments and everything you have achieved thus far is truly an eyeopener and also one of the most rewarding feelings! Imagine going through the list of goals you wrote down and noticing how many of those you have reached or are close to reaching!

Now there is a difference between short-term goals & long-term goals. Short-term goals are things you can accomplish within a year or less. These are the goals that we work on daily and keep track of the most. An example of a short-term goal would be to pay off a loan before the end of the year. With long-term goals, these are things we want to get done in the future. There is really no time frame since we constantly work towards these goals, but they can be for the near future or several years out. An example of a long-term goal would be to put a down payment on a house or deciding to get your master’s degree. I think having a list of both short-term and long-term goals helps keep us motivated in wanting to do better!

From my personal experience, I have found that writing my goals down twice a year (at the minimum) has helped me reach them a lot faster. I used to think that if I just kept them in my head and repeated them to myself every now and then, I would get them done, but honestly this doesn’t work well. I would either forget some of my goals and remember them later or just not have the motivation in me to make any steps closer to them. There is something about writing your goals down and looking at them everyday that helps! I’m not even lying. Try it and refer back to that list. You will see exactly what I mean!

Whether you want to become a better person, own your own business, or eat healthier, we always have goals we want to accomplish and will strive to meet them! Next time you say to yourself, “I wish I could be better at this” add it to your list! I’m 100% certain when you look back and see how many of your goals have been met, you will be so proud of yourself!😊 Good luck and Happy New Year!

      1. Ah yes! I 100% agree! Writing your goals down whether they be short term or long term helps you achieve them. If I don’t write them down I don’t follow through. It’s also the reason I make to do lists for the day, if I don’t nothing gets done.

    1. Great advice. New Years Resolutions are so hard to keep because there is so much pressure around them. I much prefer setting smaller goals and keeping track of them in my notebook. I like to do a mix of weekly and monthly goals because it allows me to adjust my goals to my current life situation.

  1. Writing them down is key! I write them down and keep them on a counter at home, update progress during the year. I think there’s scientific studies that support writing them down yields higher success. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I agree! I’m constantly setting goals for myself. When it comes to the New Year I like to set one BIG goal and a ton of small ones so for me, my big goal for 2020 is to graduate university! Some of my smaller goals include: run a 10km race, stop dying my hair, and to stretch more. πŸ™‚

  3. Great post. I like the idea of reevaluating and re-setting goals more than once a year, and how you differentiate between long term and short term goals. This helps our focus and with staying motivated, breaks it down in a more manageable way.

  4. A person I know has his birthday in the middle of the year so he uses his birthday and the new year to look back and set new goals. He also evaluates where he is in the path to where he wants to be. The twice a year goal setting is actually good advice.

  5. I always find writing my goals down to be a massive help! I use a traffic light system. Anything I want to meet soon is red, as I know I need to work on it urgently. Anything between long term and short term is orange then anything a bit longer off is green.

      1. Earlier this year I created a vision board so that I could see my goals each day when I entered my office. I also left space so that I can add things as I accomplish other goals.

I agree that goals can be set all year round (and should be done so, because you might find the right motivation to accomplish something in the middle of a rainy march afternoon) but I also think it can be a good thing to set new goals for the new year. These goals can build on things you already started the year before, or it can be things you’ve wanted to do but haven’t been brave enough to start.

    As long as your goals are reasonable, I think it’s fine to set them when ever, even at new years πŸ™‚

  9. I feel like people make more goals at the beginning of the year because of the community effect of everyone sharing their goals. Writing goals down is always a must though!

    I try not to set myself strict goals because I’ve felt pressure in the past and I’m trying to maintain a level of calm in 2020 but, I applaud your ethic and definitely agree that if you’re setting specific goals it’s good practice to write them down a couple times a year and evaluate.

  11. I generally make New Year Resolutions for the year as long term goals anyway. For example, previous NYR include:
    i. Get a job.
    ii. No sugar in my cups of tea
    iii. Cut sugar from 5 teaspoons to 3 teaspoons for coffee
    For most of them, well the bigger ones at least, I set out projects (short term goals). For example, for me getting a job (long term goal), I set dates and times for Company Hunts, as well as CV Drops, both of which are short term goals.

  12. I have such a hard time keeping to my goals. It’s crazy because this year is the 1st year that I’ve actually started writing down my goals after years of people telling me to do so. And since I’ve written them down, I’ve accomplished a few short term goals already. This was a great read and great advice. Thank you!

  13. I absolutely love the idea of adding something that I wish I was better at to my list! I always focus on bigger goals but I need to start writing out all my goals even the smallest ones – every action is a step further πŸ₯°

  14. Yes!!! I love setting goals for myself and keeping track of my progress β€” it really helps me to know I’m moving in the right direction. February was a bit of a crazy month for me, but so far 2020 has been super successful and I have goal tracking to thank for it!

  15. At the start of the year I make a list of my goals, but then I also make a specific list of how I’m going to accomplish those goals. It helps me to really plan HOW I’m going to actually accomplish the things I want to do. This year I tried to tell myself that I will check in once a month to measure my progress towards the goal, so I can readjust as needed. (Still working on that part though.)   17. It’s good to see others understand the importance of writing your goals down.
    This is absolutely necessary. Writing them down gives you a focus. Studies show writing them down increases the likelihood of you achieving them by 42%!
    It’s also important to understand that when the goals are not quite going your way, just re-adjust them and keep it moving! πŸ™‚

  18. My goals are open-ended. I have never been able to sit down and write a specific goal, like “lose five pounds”, so instead I keep a handwritten list of resolutions pinned above my dresser and read it every day. It is a reminder to make the best of each day and be aware of my faults so I can change them into positive attributes instead.
